Assisting you in transitioning to a career in teaching is our mission. Partner with us to discover whether teaching is right for you. We provide individualized counseling to assist you in exploring and selecting the best pathway to teach based on your unique needs and goals. We provide informed guidance on how to meet state teaching certification requirements and how to select a certification program. Ongoing support and mentorship can assist you in successfully transitioning and thriving in your new career.
The state recognizes that as a military service member, you are well prepared to meet the overall needs of diverse learning environments and will give you up to 5 Years teaching ‘experience’ for your active duty service. You are required to complete only 6 semester hours of professional education coursework from an accredited college in your remaining requirements.
Please complete the Counseling Form to help us provide the best guidance in the process of attaining your teaching certificate.
The following steps are based on the alternative teacher certification path offered by the Oklahoma State Department of Education. When completed you will be certified to teach secondary education in Oklahoma Schools. This path is open to anyone with a bachelors degree. There are other certification paths available, please visit with us to see if you may be eligible.
Apply for Troops to Teachers
To begin your journey to become an educator, your application with the state of Oklahoma must begin by registering with the Program Office of Troops to Teachers. Once completed they will notify you by email of the services you are eligible to receive, based on your military service time, education and application date.
To submit the online application*, the following supporting documentation will be needed.
- DD-214 (member copy 4)
- Approved Voluntary Retirement Document
- NGB 22 (National Guard ONLY)
- Reserve Yearly Point Summary
Once your program office application is complete your local state Troops to Teachers office can assist you in further steps to completing your state application for teacher certification. We look forward to working with you in the process of attaining your teaching certificate.
*Please note: You may receive an error that states that the site is not secure when trying to access the Registration Site. The error does not reflect a problem with the DoD certificates, or the web browser. It does, however, mean that the DoD certificate and the DoD Root certificate are not installed on your system. You can click on ‘details’ or ‘advanced’ and you will see a link to proceed to the website. You may also install the certificates that are missing. Submit your Application for Oklahoma Alternative Placement Program Evaluation
Submit the following:
- Application for Alternative Placement
- All College Transcripts – Note they must be official copies
- Most colleges offer electronic services to submit your official transcripts, if using an electronic service please submit to TroopsToTeachers@sde.ok.gov
- Current Resume with detailed dates
Once a certification specialist evaluates your application, you will receive an acceptance letter in the mail stating the subject area you are approved in.
Complete the OGET and your approved OSAT
Once you receive approval to seek an alternative certificate, complete the following:
- The Oklahoma General Education Test (OGET)
- The Oklahoma Subject Area Test (OSAT) in an approved subject area.
The Office of Educational Quality and Accountability (OEQA) is responsible for the development and implementation of a competency-based assessment system for educator licensure/certification in the state of Oklahoma. Testing dates and locations can be found on their website.
The VA offers a testing and licensure reimbursement program. Note: They do not reimburse for registration fees, prep guides, or processing fees. We have created a form to ensure you don’t miss any of the required information.
Submit your Application for Oklahoma Initial Alternative Certification
After you complete your required OGET & OSAT submit your :
- Application for Initial Alternative Certification
- Background and Fingerprint check
- Check or money order for $50
Fingerprints may be taken electronically at the Oklahoma State Department of Education, at one of our satellite sites located around the state, or you may have a fingerprint card taken at your local sheriff’s office or police department to send to the Oklahoma State Department of Education (OSDE) for scanning and submission.
Once completed you will receive your initial certification, and can begin teaching in a classroom!
Complete further required education courses
After your initial certification, you will have 3 years to complete:
- Required college credit courses, for the Troops to Teachers participants this includes only:
- Classroom Management
- General or subject specific Pedagogical principles (Teaching Methods)
- Pass the Oklahoma Professional Teaching Exam (OPTE)
Apply for Standard Certificate
You’ve completed all the steps, Evaluation, Testing, Initial Certification, background checks, required teaching courses, and further testing. Your very last step in becoming a career educator is to complete a final application for a standard teaching certificate.

- Proof of semester hours should be submitted on an official transcript
